Epsom Handicap 2013 tips

The feature race of the day and the second of three Group 1 races scheduled for Randwick on Saturday. A field of seventeen line up and with no less than a dozen runners either having won or finished in the top four at their most recent start, it makes for a fantastic race. Sydney’s leading trainers Gai Waterhouse and Chris Waller both have three runners entered but it could be Warwick Farm trainer Guy Walter, represented by Streama ($7.00) and Toydini ($4.40 and favourite) who are both last start winners that may hold the key. Along with Boban ($4.80) they are the only runners under double figure odds.

About the Epsom Handicap

The Epsom Handicap is a Group 1 race held under handicap conditions. Run during the Sydney spring racing carnival, the Epsom Handicap takes place at Randwick Racecourse every October. This event is held over a distance of 1600 metres and is worth $500,000 in prize money.

The Epsom Handicap is held on Epsom Handicap Day, and shares the bill with some other Group 1 races. Along with the main event, punters can also enjoy the Spring Champion Stakes for three year olds, The Metropolitan for stayers, and the Flight Stakes for three year old fillies. The Epsom Handicap has a long and rich history in Australian racing, with the first event run way back in 1865.

This race was first run over a distance of 8 furlongs, changing to a 1600 metre event when the metric system was introduced in 1972. A few years later in 1979, the Epsom Handicap was elevated from a Principal Race to a Group 1 race. A number of top quality horses have taken out the Epsom Handicap over this time, including some who have won on back to back occasions.

Back to back winners include Masquerade in 1882 and1883, Melodrama in 1907 and 1908, Chatham in 1932 and 1933, Toi Port in 1963 and 1964, Super Impose in 1990 and 1991, and Desert War in 2004 and 2005. Other notable winners include Theseo in 2008, Racing To Win in 2006, Shogun Lodge in 2000, Dodge in 1998, and Filante in 1996.

The Epsom Handicap is the major horse race of the Randwick spring carnival, and one of two (along with the Doncaster Handicap) Group 1 mile events at Randwick Racecourse. The Epsom Handicap can be a good indicator of future races, including events like the Caulfield Guineas, Toorak Handicap, Crystal Mile, Myer Classic, Hawkesbury Gold Cup, and Emirates Stakes.

Recent winners of the Epsom Handicap include Theseo in 2008, Rock Kingdom in 2009, Captain Sonador in 2010, Secret Admirer in 2011, and Fat-Al in 2012. Fat-Al won the 2012 event in front of Ambidexter in second position and Rolling Pin in third.
